At Snapethorpe Primary School, we believe that the values of our school underpin the SMSCD development of all learners. We recognise that the personal development of pupils, spiritually, morally, socially and culturally, plays a significant part in their ability to learn and achieve. Therefore, we take a cross-curricular approach that provides pupils with opportunities to explore and develop SMSCD so that they are prepared for life in diverse, modern Britain.

SMSCD will deliver a curriculum that:

• Enhances community and celebrates the cultural diversity within our school.
• Is inclusive, develops self-confidence and identifies that all our children are unique, as well as recognising their potential.
• Encourages our children to be self-motivated, independent and resilient by developing inquiry-based skills that allow them to make mistakes and learn from them.
• Enables each child to add a positive contribution to their community and the wider society.
• Promotes an equal value on their physical and mental well-being and ensures they are prepared for life in modern Britain. 

SMSCD including British values are at the heart of our curriculum and therefore are embedded across all subjects and threaded through our school ethos and daily life. With this whole school, inclusive approach, our vision is to help each individual child develop clear aspirations of who they want to be in our world.

Implementation

SMSCD plays a significant part in their ability to learn and achieve. We therefore aim to provide an education that provides pupils with opportunities to explore and develop. Our staff model the importance of being a reflective citizen and excellent SMSCD values are threaded through our school ethos and daily life. Through daily discussions, careful planning of vocabulary and questioning, children have the opportunity to explore values and beliefs and the ways in which they impact on people’s lives. Extra-curricular clubs and enriching experiences that promote fundamental British values are provided throughout the year across all year groups. Opportunities to demonstrate how democracy works is present through all subjects by valuing children’s view and ensuring that all pupils within the school have a voice that is listened to. Democracy is further explored through school council and fair voting processes in school.

All curriculum areas have a contribution to make to the child’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and opportunities for this are planned in each area of the curriculum. Our Curriculum provide children with various opportunities to increase their cultural awareness so that pupils appreciate diversity and richness of other cultures. Our RSHE teaching scheme also promotes specific teachings that encompass SMSCD areas too. All curriculum areas use illustrations and examples drawn from as wide a range of cultural contexts as possible.

Through assemblies, we aim to provide an all-inclusive opportunity to build and reinforce community values; reflect on and understand elements of life which are of value and worth; provide a variety of opportunities for spiritual, moral, social, cultural and diverse and development; provide opportunities for expressing shared experiences and interests and for celebrating special occasions together.

Impact

Through consistent and high-quality teaching of SMSCD our children will: 

• Be thoughtful and children that grown into considerate moral adults that are self-reliant and resilient, leading healthy and happy lives.  
• Be self-motivated, independent and resilient by developing inquiry-based skills that allow them to make mistakes and learn from them.
• Through deeper learning a reflection of others and different lives we know that our children will grow to seize opportunities beyond their perceived horizons. 
• Snapethorpe children will feel that their views are valued. 
• Be confident to reflect and challenge previously held views. 
• Have high level of self-esteem and self-confidence. 
• Distinguish right from wrong, accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative.
• Respect for other people and different cultural traditions by enabling children to acquire an appreciation of and respect for their own and other cultures.

As part of our SMSCD curriculum throughout Snapethorpe, we have also incorporated a variety of books which we ensure the children read in each year group. These books explore a selection of SMSCD topics as well as exploring the 9 protected characteristics. Our equality day took place on the 29th November, where each year group focused on a particular book as well as discussing the 9 protected characteristics. You can find a selection of pupil voice following our equality day and photos of our new equality displays are to follow!
