Curriculum Excellence
At Snapethorpe Primary School, we endeavour to teach a curriculum, which is both inspiring and engaging thereby developing a thirst for life-long learning. We have high expectations for all our pupils supporting them to achieve their full potential in all aspects of the curriculum. In doing so, we bring alive our school ethos of Caring for All: Learning for Life.
At Snapethorpe Primary School, we focus on ensuring that all children achieve academic success in the core subjects of reading, writing and mathematics; these are key skills which enable pupils to access each area of the curriculum. In doing so, the development of early reading skills transitioning from phonic recognition to the acquisition of reading fluency and comprehension is of paramount importance. We ensure that we provide a broad and balanced curriculum, building all children's cultural capital. In order to do so, we have developed knowledge and skills based curriculum, which builds upon prior learning. The foundations of our curriculum begin in Nursery with knowledge and skills being revisited and meaningful links made through to Year 6 so that they become embedded in the children's long-term memory.
English, maths, science, computing, music, PE, PSHE and RE are all taught as weekly explicit lessons. All other foundation subjects are taught in blocks of learning throughout the year. Units of work are developed to ensure the requirements of the National Curriculum and the RE Local Syllabus are fully met. We personalise the curriculum in order to reflect the needs of our pupils and make best use of the Wakefield locality. We enrich our curriculum with visits and visitors, both locally and further afield. In doing so, we are very mindful of the financial impact on our parents and make effective use of school funding to ensure access for all pupils.
We develop our pupils spiritually, morally and socially as well as their understanding of British Values through discreet subject lessons, for example RE and PSHE as well as through our assembly themes, the manner in which the curriculum is taught and how children are expected to approach life in school. This also includes how children can safeguard themselves both in school, at home and online.
At Snapethorpe, we incorporate Kagan collaborative learning techniques into all aspects of the curriculum. These are designed to not only increase pupil engagement and support understanding of subject specific knowledge, but also develop the pupils ability to work effectively as part of a team, communicate with each other and build confidence. These are all key skills which help to make Snapethorpe Primary School a positive learning community where we are Caring for All: Learning for Life.
