Home Learning
At Snapethorpe Primary School, we believe that a strong partnership between home and school is essential for all children' success and development. Home learning plays a vital role in reinforcing classroom learning, developing essential skills, and fostering a love of lifelong learning.
Homework at Snapethorpe Primary School focuses mainly on developing the basic skills of reading, spelling and times tables knowledge. We focus on these three key areas, as we believe that:
- They are fundamental skills which underpin many aspects of English and maths and the wider curriculum;
- We as a school can build upon these within our day-to-day practice by providing opportunities to apply them across all areas of the curriculum.
In order to do this, it is expected that:
- EYFS children:
- Complete a task of their choosing from their termly home learning sheet.
- Years 1 children:
- Read a minimum of 3x per week and that this is recorded in reading record books;
- Complete the phonics task.
- Year 2 children:
- Read a minimum of 3x per week and that this is recorded in reading record books;
- Complete either a weekly spelling task OR a phonics task;
- Complete the set tasks on Times Table Rock Stars.
- Years 3 – 6 children:
- Read a minimum of 3x per week and that this is recorded in reading record books;
- Complete either a weekly spelling task set on Spelling Shed OR a phonics task;
- Complete the set tasks on Times Table Rock Stars.
Spelling Shed tasks:
- Year 3: 5 games
- Year 4: 10 games
- Year 5: 10 games
- Year 6: 10 games
Times Table Rock Stars tasks:
- Year 2: 10 games on Garage related to the 2, 5 & 10 times tables
- Year 3: 10 games on Garage
- Y4: 10 games on Garage and 5 games on Studio.
- Y5: 10 games on Garage and 10 games on Studio
- Y6: 10 games on Garage and 10 games on Studio
All homework is set on a Friday. Reading must be completed by the following Friday and Times Table Rock Stars and Spelling Shed tasks by 8:00pm on Thursday.
We provide incentives and rewards on a weekly basis for completing homework. One star point is given for each element of homework are completed, with a bonus 2 stars provided if all elements are.
As both Times Table Rock Stars and The Spelling Shed are online programmes, it is the child’s responsibility to inform their class teacher if they are having difficulty accessing. Arrangements can then be made for the child to join Homework Club.
Additional Homework Tasks
Year 6 children will also be provided with additional English and maths activities as part of a revision process in order to help them prepare for their End of Key Stage 2 SATs.
In doing so, we are mindful not to overload the children, which can be counterproductive. It is our policy not to give homework over the holidays and half term breaks. We will also not provide homework for children who are being taken out of school for term time holidays.
Homework Club
In order to support pupils who find difficulty completing their work at home, we offer a weekly Homework Club. This is to complete online Spelling Shedd and Times Table Rock Stars tasks only. Reading must still be completed at home.
Equal Opportunities
We have high expectations for all children in order to ensure that they are able to reach their full potential. Homework tasks will be modified appropriately in discussion with the SENCo, external professionals and parents in order to meet each pupil’s needs.
