At our school, we are committed to supporting the positive mental health and wellbeing of every pupil and every member of staff. We do this through whole‑school initiatives that promote a healthy, nurturing environment, as well as targeted support for children who may be more vulnerable or experiencing difficulties.
We work closely with Educational Psychologists and Mental Health Practitioners through the Local Authority. One of the key programmes we access is Future in Mind, which offers support, though referrals must be made by school when a child’s mental health is affecting their learning. If parents have concerns about their child’s emotional wellbeing at home, we encourage them to speak with us and also contact their GP for further guidance.
Alongside promoting positive mental health, we recognise the importance of identifying and responding to signs of mental ill health. Nationally, it is estimated that in an average classroom, around three children may be experiencing a diagnosable mental health condition. By implementing clear, practical policies and supportive procedures, we strive to create a safe, stable environment for all pupils, whether they are directly affected or impacted through family or friends.
We are dedicated to nurturing every child’s emotional development as they grow. Our whole‑school approach to Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is delivered through assemblies and classroom learning, helping pupils build resilience, empathy and confidence.
Our pastoral team plays a vital role in this work. The team includes two Learning Mentors, an Attendance Officer, Seedlings Practitioners, and members of our Pupil Support Team. Our Learning Mentors, Miss Whittell and Miss Senior‑White, along with Mrs. Carr, our SENDCo, are trained Mental Health First Aiders. Mrs. Carr oversees the Learning Mentor provision, and together they work closely to ensure that children receive the support they need during the school day.
Where appropriate, the pastoral team provides tailored one‑to‑one or small‑group interventions designed to help pupils navigate the challenges of modern life. These interventions offer a safe space for children to express their feelings, develop coping strategies, and build confidence.
Parents and carers, alongside children and young people aged 16 and 17 can contact the Wakefield CAMHS team directly for support. Please note that a
child or young person must be registered with a GP practice in Wakefield to access support from Wakefield CAMHS. All calls or referrals are managed centrally by the CAMHS ‘Single Point of Access’ team, who are also known as ‘SPA’. If you’re a young person aged 16 to 17, a parent or carer of a child or young person under the age of 18, you can contact the Wakefield CAMHS team directly: 01977 735865 Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm
