Geography
Intent
In order to ensure that the requirements of the National Curriculum are met, each year group teaches two Geography units throughout the year. This information can be found on our whole school coverage documents.
Geography skills are also taught using the national curriculum objectives. As a school, we have ensured each area of focus is broken down into year group specific expectations allowing all pupils to develop new knowledge and skills and build on prior knowledge as they progress through school.
Implementation
Teachers are clear on the learning and expectations for each year group, as this has been carefully mapped out so that pupils are building on prior knowledge and skills each year. There are opportunities for all pupils, including those with SEND needs, to access the learning outcomes through adaptive and metacognitive approaches to review and recall prior learning.
Teachers use questioning, and provide opportunities for discussion and investigation to support the development of key vocabulary which is identified on the medium term plans for each year group to allow pupils to build on prior knowledge. Teachers use a range of resources during lessons to help create immersive learning experiences.
Impact
Teachers make effective use of formative and summative assessment strategies to ensure that learning opportunities meet the needs of all pupils. Learning opportunities are adapted and scaffolding techniques used so that all pupils, who are able, keep up with the requirements of the National Curriculum including recalling and making links to prior learning. Adaptations to the curriculum, including personalised curriculums, are made for who do not keep up with the requirements. This information is integral within transition processes.
